Career Management is like a business plan. In this case you are the business and your goal is profit, not just financial. You need to evaluate your expectations from a job and weigh them against your life requirements. These are personal issues that we could not generalize on here. However, you must approach your career plan as if it was a business. Put to paper what you need and be ruthless in achieving it. Remember, you must provide benefit to any employer to achieve these objectives, you must deliver, and you must perform.

Think about these, no particular order, they might help you. Whatever you do... these apply to you!

  • What do you really like to do, what is it about work that you enjoy? Make a list.
  • What are your ideal jobs, what is your ideal title and what do you want to earn. What do you aspire to be. Write it down.
  • Have you a dream, what is it? What do you have to do to achieve it? Is it achievable or should you set a more realistic dream? You must have something to aim for. Write it down even dream about it.
  • What are you good at generally? What do you like most at work or at play? What gives you enjoyment? Write it down. What don't you like? Write it down.
  • What are you?
  • Who are you? Can you define yourself? Could you write a page on yourself and then cut it down to two clear sentences? Do it.
  • What is most important to you from a job? Is it money? Is it satisfaction? Is it the company car? What is it? List 10 of the most important.
  • Where can you get the top four of these? What companies could satisfy these requirements. Are you capable of them?
  • What training or qualifications do you have?
  • What experience do you have? What are you really good at? Are you really? Mmmmm, you could be a threat to us!
  • What job have you ever had that you most enjoyed?
  • Whose job would you most like to have? Is it available? Can you have it? Could you do it? Are you still dreaming?
  • What would be your top ten jobs in the world? What top jobs could you reasonably apply for?
  • If you were to start somewhere, what job could you do well tomorrow to get you on the ladder to the next one?

  • What would it take to move there? What do you have to sell and buy? Would your family etc be happy?
  • Is it feasible to make that move? What would be feasible?
  • What training or course should you do to get you that job? Can you do that course locally, at night, part-time or at weekends?
  • Will it increase your chances of getting the job you want?
  • Why you? What do you bring to the party?
  • What would it take for you to bring this to the party? What is your price?
  • Is it realistic and within norms for the job you want?
  • When you describe the job you do or want what do you say?
These are just teasers to start you thinking. However, if you think about them you may find out a little more. We just pulled these together to create a thought process.
